Plan Your Ethiopian Adventure
Explore Bahir Dar and Lake Tana, source of the Blue Nile. Visit ancient island monasteries and the Blue Nile Falls.
Bahir Dar, a picturesque city on the southern shore of Lake Tana, is one of Ethiopia's most beautiful destinations. Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile River, is dotted with over 30 islands, many of which are home to ancient monasteries.
These monasteries, dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries, are treasure troves of Ethiopian Orthodox art and culture. The most famous is Ura Kidane Mehret on the Zege Peninsula, whose circular church is decorated with vibrant murals depicting biblical scenes and saints. Visitors can reach the monasteries by traditional boat, enjoying the peaceful beauty of the lake.
Nearby, the Blue Nile Falls (Tis Isat, meaning "smoking water") is a spectacular sight. The falls plunge 45 meters into a dramatic gorge, and a walk through the surrounding countryside offers beautiful views and the chance to see local village life.
Bahir Dar is also a great base for exploring the region's coffee plantations and for birdwatching along the lake shores.
