This 3-day expedition takes you to the heart of the Afar region, where you will witness otherworldly landscapes. See the bubbling lava lake of the Erta Ale volcano, a permanent feature on one of the few continuously active volcanoes in the world. Explore the vibrant, neon-colored hydrothermal fields of Dallol, and observe the ancient tradition of salt mining, where salt bars are cut and loaded onto camel caravans.

Tour Itinerary

  • Fly from Addis Ababa to Mekelle. After a brief stop, drive to Erta Ale via Aba Ala. In the late afternoon, trek to the summit of Erta Ale to witness its spectacular lava lake. Dinner and overnight camping at the summit.

  • Enjoy a sunrise visit to the volcano before descending for breakfast. Drive to Hamed Ela, and in the late afternoon, visit Lake Asale to see the stunning salt flats at sunset. Overnight at the campsite in Hamed Ela.

  • Early morning excursion to the vibrant Dallol Sulphur Springs. Witness the salt mining operations. Drive back to Hamed Ela for lunch, then continue to Mekelle to catch your flight back to Addis Ababa.
